Clip description

This clip contains a segment on Aboriginal boxer Dave Sands, one of the Sands boxing brothers from Burnt Ridge in New South Wales. He is filmed getting out of bed to commence his daily routine – an early morning run (followed by manager Tom Maguire), then arriving at the kitchen table to eat breakfast and read the newspaper. Later, a man watches him from ringside as he spars in the boxing ring. Sands and his partner demonstrate boxing techniques for the camera, breaking down the moves into slow sections. The final sequence is filmed from the point of view of Sands’s opponent. Sands boxes towards the camera as it ducks and weaves around him.

Curator’s notes

The final sequence in this clip is beautifully filmed. The hand-held feel captures the immediacy and spontaneity of boxing as well as Sands’s own physicality. By placing the camera in the position of his opponent, the audience experiences a fight in a more dynamic way than when the same action is filmed from outside the ring in a static shot.
