“Prominent film men say 'Au Revoir’
[Australasian Gazette – Master Pictures]
Curator’s clip description
by Elizabeth Taggart-Speers
Beginning with an intertitle to give the context, this newsreel segment proceeds to show WA Gibson and Norman Dawn boarding a ship bound for Tasmania. A second intertitle explains their purpose in visiting locations for the film For the Term of His Natural Life. The clip ends with the two men tipping their hats to camera.”
What I’ve noticed is the last ten seconds shows a stuffed animal standing beside our filmmakers. Why, it’s Felix the Cat!
I have sheet-music entitled “Felix Kept On Walking” apparently issued in conjunction with “Felix” cartoons appearing in Pathe’s “Eve & Everybody’s Film Review”. This doesn’t fit with Australiasian Films Ltd production at the time of “For the term of his natural life” for which this gazette was the subject.
Gabivalla, Felix’s first film was produced in 1919 and the song “Felix Kept on Walking” was released in 1923, three years before the 'Prominent film men say Au Revoir’ report in the Australasian Gazette in 1926. By then, Felix was at the peak of his popularity, so it’s no surprise that one of the passengers had a stuffed Felix on board.
